Texas unemployment rate continues to rise.

01/22/10 | by txwordpounder [mail] | Categories: News, Real Life

The Texas Workforce Commission reported today that the Texas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 8.3 percent in December, up from 8 percent the previous month. Statewide, the total non-agricultural labor force shrank by over 20,000 as more unemployed workers simply gave up on finding jobs.

Over 1 million Texas workers are now unemployed, a larger number than even during the Great Depression of the 1930s. And that doesn't take into account the number of unemployed agricultural workers who are not counted in the official unemployment statistics.

The economy is not getting better, it is getting worse.

It seems as though Texas is willing to let its residents go hungry and homeless in the name of politics. Everyone knows that many of the long-term unemployed who have exhausted Tier 3 really need the assistance of Tier 4 benefits. I’ve been on unemployment benefits since May 2008. I never dreamed I would ever have been without work this long. I, and thousands of others cannot receive a mere 6 weeks of Tier 4 benefits because the state requirements to trigger payment of those benefits have been consistently reported to the Department of Labor at 8.2% and the magic number is 8.5%.
Unfortunately, this is not the only trick that Texas is using to deny unemployment benefits. I have also been denied State Extended Benefits because my spouse found employment in another state and I had the audacity to move with my spouse. This is a disqualification that manifests itself AFTER you’ve exhausted regular UI benefits and EUC benefits. Imagine the situation that this ruling is causing thousands of families that are shifting states just to work. What a way to cheat hard working Americans.

Those that govern Texas are saying, go on welfare, check your families into the homeless shelters, and then go feed your families at the local food bank. We hear your complaints and pleas for help. Unfortunately, we don't care that you’ve worked your adult life and are out of jobs at no fault of your own, so what, too bad. I ask all of you, how convenient is it to report 8.2% to the Department of Labor? Texas is not the only state that is consistently reporting unemployment numbers below the rate that could help families. Rick Perry and other Republican Representative are attempting to prove to the Democrats that they don't want to spend to help anybody!! Unfortunately, no one (republicans) had a single problem with spending to fund a war that started with the ploy of looking for Weapons of Mass Destruction, those weapons never materialized. Note, I am not against protecting American citizens and supporting US troops. I am against the lies, which caused America to be involved in two wars. Meanwhile, the US economy has gone up in smoke because of loss of jobs and homes, Wall Street greed and overspending on wars. Sure, I’d prefer to work versus getting $300 in unemployment so if someone can find jobs for others and myself, we will gladly take it! In the meantime, American’s need assistance and we should get it.

Well we are now into th first week of june,2010 and our State is still suffering tremendously! Our State Representatives need to give all of a chance to recieve the benefits we deserve by posting correct numbers of peoplr who are still unemployeed and have been for a couple of years,(MORE OR LESS). What difference does it really make to them? Really,I mean do they wany most of
what used to be the," middle class", experienced workers, who have alot to bring to the table, (as far as "EXPERIENCE", and good work ethics), to keep suffering just because Mr. Rick Perry, wants our State to look appealing to other out of work people from other States. Know darn well he has nothing to offer them when they get here, BECAUSE....He Kied about the unemployment rate in our GREAT STATE. So for all you great floks out there who are in the, "Prime of your life", ( 40-60 year olds), who are still out of work: yes...I agree with you, Our State was once Great And we did have a great workforce, but now !!!! Who knows why the lies keep flying why we are so desperate just pay our bills and feed our family's. I hope our Texas state officials take a lon hard look at what they have done to us and have the compassion to hear our voices and help us.
Good Luck To Us, and may our government be ashamed of what they have done. Don't forget alot of us live rural areas and are used to commuting 30-50 miles to work for reasonable pay.Are We Being Counted are just Bid Metropolitin Counties like Harris.
How can they look in the mirror everyday and truely believe that our economy is, " BOUNCING" back. Please get real and help!

Please excuse all of my mispelled words above, I was just so MAD to hear about what our State Reps. are doing to us here in Texas and I wish I new what we could do about it! I am not an idiot, just type too fast when I am mad and then I mispell words. So Please forgive me! I wish you all some luck in finding work, and wish the same for myself.

Give yourselves a hand for sticking it out and just maybe one day one of "US", will find a way out of this mess without depending on our unloyal representatives of this Great State of Texas.
